Is This You In 10 Years?
Here’s something to consider today… if anyone says to you that such and such thing is more than 10 years away, what they’re really saying is they don’t even know if that thing is possible.
Long term goals and targets are important but anything over ten years might be too challenging for your brain to comprehend and put real attention on.
For example, “Flying cars are still more than 10 years away.”
Translation: Flying cars may never happen.
Are any of your dreams are more than 10 years out? Would you consider that what you’re actually saying is that you really don’t know if it’s possible?
4 Tips For Setting Your Future Vision:
- Shorten the time cycle: Take any goal you have right now and compress the time you think it will take to actually accomplish it. Compress it so that it makes you a little nervous and adds real urgency to it. Remember what Grant says in The 10X Rule, “pressure makes diamonds.”
- Don’t make any goal longer than 10 years: If you have 20 and 30 year visions for yourself, that’s great. Keep those and add these: What will your life look like when you hit your 20 year target in half the time? What would you need to do to hit that?
- Make your goal 12 months, 3 years, or at most 5 years: Macro goal plus micro goals. Think about what you’d like to accomplish. How could you get it done in under 10 years? Come up with actual plans to accomplish it in 5 years, 3 years and 1 year.
- Anything beyond 5 years and you’re getting too distant: When you look at a goal that’s over 5 years, does the vision start to cloud?
Life is too short.
So, forget about you in 10 years, forget about the 2030s, what are you going to do THIS DECADE?
Consider that even John F. Kennedy spoke in 1961 and told the nation that he was committed to landing a man on the moon before the end of the decade. By 1969 they did it.
This just goes to show that WHATEVER IS POSSIBLE, you can achieve within a decade as long as you put enough energy, focus, and actions towards it.
Make your goals HUGE, and commit to them now. Dreams do happen, but you must move toward them.
