Cold Sales Prospecting: Hello? Can You Hear Me?
“At some point in your career you will be required to call someone you don’t know to get something you want.” —Grant Cardone
Grant was talking with a friend the other day and he told me that in college he worked in the Student Affairs Office and had to call job posting listings to update their newsletter.
These were calls to see if the job poster had filled the job.
Turns out he couldn’t do it. He would fake the call and not dial the number so he wouldn’t have to talk to someone on the other end of the line!
For him, he just had a fear or some kind of mental block when he had to cold call someone. Imagine if he had to actually SELL the person on anything.
If it’s hard calling people you don’t know, it’s even more difficult to sell people you don’t know.
That’s why cold sales prospecting is one of the most difficult and yet, one of the most valuable skills you can possess.
A salesperson who has mastered prospecting can single-handedly pull a business out of obscurity and begin to increase sales.
Grant practiced for years and years perfecting prospecting because I didn’t want to wait around for leads to be handed out to me.
He didn’t want to be dependent on a pipeline that he didn’t control. Once he learned how to master prospecting his pipeline was always full of leads.
You need to know prospecting and the many parts and steps to be successful at sales. You need to know how to make a call and plan for it. Also, there’s the creating of the list of who you are going to call.
